AltAss Ratings (On a scale of 1 to 5 asses)

Plot:
The classic revenge theme is played well enough to hold interest and entertain.

Writing:

Some admittedly cheesy dialogue takes a little away from some interesting characters and the stark contrasts between them.

Acting:

Dwayne Johnson is obviously challenging himself by taking on a diverse assortment of roles. In this case he isn't able to rely on humor to assist him in creating his character and he puts forth an admirable effort despite being at times obviously outside of his comfort zone. Billy Bob Thornton is a pro and shows the humanity of his villain masterfully.

Originality:

An action revenge film with darker undertones than most films of its genre that offers very little levity and no sense of redemption for the protagonist.

Overall:

Not a homerun but an effort that should be applauded for attempting to do some different things even if they don't all work. The biggest criticism may be that there was not enough action because Dwayne Johnson's character is kind of like Walker Texas Ranger, nobody can touch him, ever, no matter what. This makes for very short action sequences because none of the bad guys can put up much of a fight.
